Down and Out in Drohobych
By Ivan Franko, translated by Yuri Tkacz
Autobiographical short stories from the late 1800s about Franko’s years as a child and teenager. The stories often deal with people’s struggles with their own conscience, agonizing over the morality of their actions. From those of a young boy having killed a bird, to those of a prisoner having killed a cellmate. The title of the book is drawn from a novella of the same name, written after the author was thrown into prison for his political activism.
